Beard care essentials for all beards

When I first started growing my beard I figured the simple combs and what-not I had lying around would be sufficient enough for what little facial hair I had to work with.  I had heard of mustache combs and beard oils but didn’t think they applied to me since I didn’t have much of a stache to comb and only stubble to oil.  I told myself those products were for men with actual beards and maybe one day oils, waxes and combs might have a place in my bearded life – but not yet.

That line of thinking is completely false.

If you have any amount of facial hair there are products out there you need.

The beardsman’s must haves include:
Mustache comb
Mustache wax
Beard comb
Beard oil
Beard trimmer

Which ones you buy are totally up to you, but I’ve become a big fan of Beardbrand and the line of products they offer.  It’s important for every beardsman to spend some time researching the products they need and purchasing those products from companies they really want to support.  I’ve cruised the internet and have found several companies I like and will financially support through purchasing their products and contributing to their cause (through blog posts and product reviews).

I’ve been learning more and more about beard care and experimenting with different products to create my own “must have” collection of products.  Here’s just a taste:

Beardbrand mustache comb
Beardbrand pocket beard comb
Brylcreem hair treatment
Father’s mustache wax
Beard trimmers - I’m still hunting for a good set of beard trimmers but I think I’ll be purchasing a set from Beardbrand.

Quick note:  I do not work for Beardbrand.  I’m only plugging their products because I really, really like them.

A mustache comb is not only an essential item it’s cool.  Mustache combs are tiny but their role in the life of a mustache is huge.  Don’t let their size influence your assessment of their importance.

A beard comb is also an essential component in a beardman’s toolkit.  You might think a regular comb is all you need, but you’re wrong.  Cheap-ass plastic combs from Wal-mart have jagged teeth that will tear apart your beard.

Mustache wax helps tame deviant hairs, smells amazing and is frickin’ fun to apply.  Don’t be embarrassed if you find yourself applying as much as you want to create that wild-west look you’ve envied since you were a young boy – It’s ok, we’ve all done it.

Beard oil helps smooth and tame beards of all lengths.  I use beard oil from time to time but I have found Brylcreem is my favorite.  Use oils to turn that rough scraggly beard into a soft pillow of facial hair awesomeness.

A good pair of trimmers will do wonders for your beard.  Much like cheap combs cheap trimmers will wreak havoc on your facial hair.  You want something sharp and finely crafted so you don’t end up with splintered hairs.

If you're going to grow a beard (and you should) you need to take care of it.  It's a commitment and even though beards are receiving cultural acceptance you need to impress the masses.  Take care of you beard and your beard will take of you.
